Pretty basic fare for a Thursday night. Kasper wasn't too bothered about eating so just had beans on toast which left James and me to please ourselves. I thought it was a good chance to use some Marks and Spencer chicken from the 'Cook' range which I'd bought when reduced as it was near its use by date and had stashed in the freezer. It was flavoured with garlic and herbs and would have been lovely with salad and new potatoes but as it was still a bit cold, I decided to serve it with pasta stirred in pesto and a few chopped tomatoes. The pesto was from a jar but authentically Italian as it was from a hamper James won in a competition run by Peroni. This gave the meal a bit of an edge but as it was a school night, there was no beer to be had.
As it was quite a light dinner, we had a pudding - some ice cream from a new range at M and S. It was blueberry cheesecake flavour which promised a richness it didn't really deliver on tasting. Not awful by any means but I probably wouldn't bother again. The blueberries made an excellent combination with the ice cream but there just wasn't enough velvety depth to suggest a cheesecake mix aside from a few chunks of biscuity base. I felt I could have eaten loads of it as a result which made for a pretty unsatisfying indulgence. It is fairly low in calories though (190 per 1/5 pot), about on a par with some of the shop's 'low fat' dessert options.
